Why visit Syros  in October?

If you're searching for warm countries in Europe in October, Greece is definitely worth considering. During October, as the crowds have left the Greek Islands, Syros still remains open with locals, who live there year-round.

Syros is a great destination to travel to in October: the weather is pleasant, and you might be able to find some good deals on prices.

Can you swim or sunbathe in Syros  in October?

Syros is one of the best places to visit in Europe in October for sun. Throughout the entire month of October, I went for a weekly swim in one of the many swim spots around the island of Syros!  Admittedly, the water temperatures started to get a bit colder by the end of October, but I kept up my swim through November without a wetsuit.

What are the best things to do and places to visit in Syros in October?

I found the month of October particularly enjoyable to stroll through the shops on the waterfront of Ermoupolis without breaking a sweat.

It is also the perfect month to climb the hundreds of stairs to the top of Ano Syros to enjoy the cute white-washed pedestrian-friendly village overlooking the sea and incredible views of Syros.

Syros in October

Are there any festivals in Syros in October?

If you enjoy local celebrations, I recommend being in Syros at the end of October.  On October 28th, you'll find the Town Square in Ermoupolis bustling with locals dressed in traditional costumes. Parades of school children wave Greek flags, as locals celebrate Oxi Day.

Also known as "No" Day, this day is celebrated to commemorate when the Greeks said NO to an ultimatum from Mussolini, the Italian dictator during WWII. I think you'll find it fun to join in the celebrations with the local families in Syros.

What to wear in Syros in October?

During the day it is quite mild and even hot enough in the sunshine to wear shorts, capris or a sundress. However, as the sun sets in the evenings, I recommend having a sweater on hand and a pair of pants.

If you prefer to keep your feet dry or the temperatures do not allow water and beach activities, there are plenty of things to do on land too. Explore the charming old town, eat and drink at the many restaurants and bars, go shopping in the boutique shops, and look for the best viewpoints.

11 - Swedish Lapland

Why visit Swedish Lapland in October?

While Swedish Lapland may not offer the same level of warmth as other destinations on this list during October, it remains a relatively mild period. This makes it an excellent time to witness the mesmerizing northern lights and explore the breathtaking natural wonders of the region. So, I’ve decided to include Swedish Lapland to this list.

Swedish Lapland is often considered a cold destination, but it is actually a very good place to visit in October. Visiting Swedish Lapland in October offers a unique and rewarding experience.

October is the month when the stunning autumn foliage is at its peak in Swedish Lapland. The forests and landscapes transform into a vibrant display of red, orange, and yellow hues. Exploring the region during this time allows you to witness the breathtaking beauty of nature and capture stunning photographs.

The biggest advantage over winter is that you still have enough daylight hours. You can expect around 8 to 10 hours of daylight, with the days gradually becoming shorter as the month progresses. The longer nights and clear autumn skies provide favorable conditions for witnessing the spectacular northern lights.

Another advantage over winter is that October generally sees fewer tourists in Swedish Lapland. This means you can enjoy a more serene and tranquil experience, with fewer crowds at popular attractions and a greater sense of wilderness.

Weather in October in Swedish Lapland

In October, Swedish Lapland experiences the transition from autumn to winter, and the weather begins to get colder and the days shorter. Average temperatures in October range from around 0°C to 7°C (32°F to 45°F).  Sure, the weather may not be scorching hot like it is in Greece during October, but the breathtaking Northern lights more than make up for it!

What are the best things to do and places to visit in Swedish Lapland  in October?

12 - Madeira, Portugal

Why visit Madeira in October?

Outside of the half-term school holidays, you'll find Madeira in its off-season, meaning hotel prices are much more wallet-friendly and the handful of sandy beaches less crowded. Still, the weather is great, crowds fewer, and it's the tail-end of the whale-watching season.

Weather in October in Madeira

Madeira's October weather is usually sunny and warm, with upper temperatures reaching around 23°C (73°F). Even at night, the temperatures can remain around 18°C (64°F), making it one of the best places to visit in Europe in October for a beach vacation.

Can you swim or sunbathe in Madeira in October?

Absolutely. Madeira is the warmest place in Europe in October. The waters are a welcoming 23°C (73.5°F) on the south coast and slightly lower on the more aggressive north. If you don't want to go beach swimming, I'd suggest heading to one of the natural pools carved out of the lava rock, such as those in Porto Moniz.

Are there any festivals or events in Madeira in October?

Depending on the year, you might catch the last days of the grape harvest in October — Madeira is one of Portugal's wine regions — although the Wine Harvest Festival officially wraps up in September.

Other small events in October include the island's film festival and Machico's Mircales Festival, with the candlelit procession being the most exciting event.

Madeira in October

What are the best things to do in Madeira in October?

October is a fantastic time to hike Madeira's levada (irrigation channel) walking trails as they will be less busy and humid – I suggest a sunrise start above the clouds on the Pico Ruivo.

You'll also want to book a boat tour to try and spot dolphins and whales before the migration season, and join a Madeira Wine tasting, while the excitement of the harvest is still in the air.

What to wear in Madeira in October?

When packing for Madeira in October, consider that it's almost always spring on the island, and bring clothes accordingly. Beach gear is a must, as is a light raincoat and a jumper for chiller evenings.

While attire is generally quite laid-back in Madeira, even in more upscale restaurants, a formal dress or shirt is a good idea for more traditional dining rooms.

What is a unique place to stay in Madeira?

Stay at Quinta da Saraiva, a family-run boutique hotel on a farm, so you can pick your own bananas and eggs for breakfast before sinking into the panoramic pool or jacuzzi overlooking the ocean.

13 - Kotor, Montenegro

Why visit Kotor in October?

Kotor is gorgeous no matter what time of year you visit, but in summer, you'll not only be surrounded by other travellers but also cruise ships.

Therefore, October is a great time to visit as the cruise season is basically over, yet the weather is still (usually) great. The lower prices for hotels are also very tempting.

Weather in October in Kotor

In October, Kotor's weather is welcoming, with highs between 19°C to 23°C (66°F to 73°F). However, evenings can be a little chiller, when temperatures can drop to 10°C (50°F).

Can you swim or sunbathe in Kotor in October?

The 21°C (70°F) water temperatures are pleasant enough for a swim, especially for a refreshing dip after hiking up to the fortress.

Are there any festivals or events in Kotor in October?

By October, Kotor's busy summer events calendar has already come to a close – but trust me, that's a good thing; being able to enjoy the serenity of the bay is one of the main reasons to visit right now.

Kotor in October

What are the best things to do in Kotor in October?

One of the best things about visiting Kotor in October is being able to hike the mighty Ladder Of Kotor trail — which leads to an epic viewpoint overlooking the Bay of Kotor — without the intense summer heat.

From high above, you can also tour the city's fortress, and the Old Town will be far more peaceful without numerous day-trippers.

Make the most of the lack of cruise ships and take a boat tour around the bay (I recommend the sailings which include the Blue Grotto) and consider hiring a car to enjoy a Montenegro road trip and visit some other parts of the country, such as Durmitor National Park or the Tara Canyon, where the last of the autumn foliage decorates hikes.

What to wear in Kotor in October?

You'll want to pack your beachwear and flip-flops for a dip, but Kotor in October also calls for more layers. While it's not as chilly during the day, the nights can be a little cold. In upscale bars and restaurants, dresses and shirts are expected.

For an exceptional stay in the Bay of Kotor, save up and splurge with a few nights onboard the Yacht Primorka or a similar boat option.

Moored on a private pier a short walk from the Old Town, the chance to wake up on the waters admiring this UNESCO-listed site from your private deck is pretty special!

October is the perfect time to relax on the beach of Cascais. The Atlantic Ocean is always cold, but the locals have acclimated, so you will always see a few people in the water, and you can expect some wind, but it will be quiet with few tourists. There are always a few people surfing, no matter how cold the water is.

I recommend visiting the Pena Palace in October when the skies are clear, and there are few tourists (especially during the week). October is the perfect time to get breathtaking photos of the lush landscape of the mountain.

The Pena Palace isn't the only Castle in Sintra.

I recommend exploring Quinta da Regaleira, Moors Castle, Sintra National Palace, and Sintra Old Town. While in Sintra, you must stop by Alba Gelato, owned by the sweetest French couple.

Another reason to visit Sintra in October is the day trips. Sintra is the perfect location to take day trips to explore the beauty Portugal has to offer. The best day trips from Sintra in October include Ericeira, Cabo da Roca, and Torres Vedras.

For film lovers, there is the Lisbon and Sintra Film Festival in October. Attendees can have their voices heard and discuss ideas and get to know filmmakers and artists.

16 - Shkoder, Albania

Why visit Shkoder in October?

Many people haven't caught on to how beautiful and unique Albania is, but it won't stay that way for long. This small, Mediterranean country is located in the Balkan region of Europe. Its climate is similar to its well-known neighbors, Italy to the west and Greece to the south.

After visiting a few times, I quickly fell in love and decided to start living in Albania. I'd recommend you visit the small town in the north called Shkoder, one of my favorite places.

If you love history and nature this is the place for you. Also, if you happen to be someone who likes to travel on a budget and look for cheap places to visit in Europe in October, Albania should be your choice.

Shkoder is known as Albania's ancient city, and also fondly referred to as the capital of the north. Northern Albania has a distinct culture from the south, so much so that it's also called Ghegaria. You'll hear a different type of Albanian spoken here, called Gheg. Shkoder has been a center for art, culture, and religious diversity for hundreds of years. It's one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in Europe, with evidence proving there have been inhabitants since at least the Bronze Age. You have to visit Albania at least once in your life, and October is quite a good time for this.

Albania in October

Weather in October in Shkoder

The weather in October in Shkoder is still pleasant since there are still plenty of sunny days. It can range from 15-25C or 59-77F, and when you're directly in the sun it can feel warmer. Visiting Shkoder in October is great because you get great weather, but not all of the crowds. Even though you might not have heard much about Albania, trust me it is very popular and each summer tourism increases.

Can you swim or sunbathe in Shkoder in October?

Being in Shkoder means you are only 30 mins from the Adriatic if you're yearning for a beach day - it can range from 20-24C or 68 to 75F.

Shkoder is perfectly centered near three rivers and right on Lake Shkodra - the largest lake in the Balkan region.

Coming in October means you get to enjoy plenty of water activities minus the crowds. Nearby you can go swimming, boating, kayaking, canyoning, and also find some impressive waterfalls too.

What are the best things to do and places to visit in Shkoder in October?

Hiking is one of the best things to do in Shkoder as it's the access point for the stunning Albanian Alps. Visiting in October means you get to see all of the leaves changing while hiking, which is stunning.

What to wear in Shkoder in October?

I'd recommend you pack some nice outfits to go out to dinner, but make sure to bring something warm since it gets colder at night. You should also pack active wear if you're planning to spend a lot of time outdoors.

What is a unique place to stay in Shkoder?

If you'd like a cute, traditional place to stay in the city center, check out Hotel Tradita!
